The next time MY registry blows up, MS KB article 309531 is a lifesaver. It depicts how to manually restore a registry backup from the "Restore Points". Note that weirdness occured using the NTFSPro demo (systernals.com) to copy the files from the System Volume Information folder... didn't copy the ACL or something. BUT it did disable security so that Recovery Console could reach the folder (which is normally hidden).
-
System Restore link path (in case spyware or virus or user has deleted the link): %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
-
Path and filename of the "minimize all to show Desktop" shortcut: %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch file: "Show desktop.scf"
-
Fix wrong thumbnail. Right click. Select "Refresh Thumbnail".
-
Set a folder to Pictures type to enable Filmstrip view.
Right-click the folder and select Properties from the context menu.
Select the Customize tab.
Under "Use this folder type as a template:", select either Photo Album or Pictures and click OK.
From the Windows Explorer View menu, select Filmstrip to view the pictures from within the selected folder.
