Free Virtual Disk Encryption WinXP

I still use TrueCrypt, but will eventually migrate over to Veracrypt. The TC gang shut down the shop a year or two ago. VC forked from that last version of TC.

For something current, and still under active development try TrueCrypt. It was originally based on E4M. It now supports XP/2K/NT, unofficial Windows 9x support with older versions. GPL. IMHO, probably the best choice for free disk encryption today.

They've since moved to Sourceforge: http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/
And if you follow these instructions, you can mount files over a network (which isn't quite easy yet)

Hmm... encrypts files on client so that cloud drives like Google Drive would only get encrypted files. Sort of a bundled TrueCrypt thing. Open source. Interesting. https://cryptomator.org/

There is a version of PGPDisk 6.5 that was released (by mistake?) to the public as freeware. The complex history of PGP is beyond the scope of this scribble. Anyway, someone who used to go by CKT has picked up the code and updated it to work on XP. I've tested it on Win98 and WinXP - it works quite well. Source code is available, FWIW.

Edit: Looks like the site moved. 30 Sept 2003.

Update: It appears that CKT's PGP is no more. If you ask Google nicely you may find a mirror, perhaps the P2P networks will have copies. 2004-05-20
