OLD:

Encryption. Secrets aren't necessarily bad. It's a good idea to keep critical info encrypted in case your PC gets hacked. There are enough credit card numbers floating around cyberspace, I don't want mine out there too.

For Win9x I\'ve use Scramdisk. Now discontinued, but the binaries are still available (it was open source).

For WinNT/2000/XP google for PGPDisk, there is a free version out there (some kind of pre-commercialization fork, IIRC).  (It's not from the main PGP site, which sells a commercial version... don't have the link handy just right now.)
