MS Office

Office 2016

change the product key used... i.e. when you've messed up the tracking:

cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\ospp.vbs" /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

fetch the last block of characters from the installed key(s):
cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

-------
Version Number Matching:
- Office 2010 = 14
- Office 2007 = 12
- Office 2003 = 11
- Office XP = 10

--------------

Hmm... those words below from 2003 are still fairly true.  I still use Office, despite trying OpenOffice every once in a while.

In newer Office versions:

Disable ""This document is both encrypted and password protected. The Office Open XML Formats available in the 2007 release provide stronger encryption. Do you want to increase the security of this document by converting to an Office Open XML Format? Yes/No"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security]

"NoPromptForRC4Encryption"=dword:00000001

-------------

The real monopoly...

MS owning Windows is nice, but owning the file format to all the documents created by Corporate America in the last decade is the real power base.
