Disable Excel files from opening inside Internet Explorer windows

I hate trying to explain what is happening when they open links to Excel files from within Internet Explorer. It's a stupid, stupid behaviour for Excel and Word. For Adobe PDFs, maybe it's OK. It bothers me, and I can only imagine that it really bothers less computer literate people. This also applies to Word .doc's.

Anyway, to disable this behaviour:

Open Windows Explorer (that's the file browser, not the web browser!). Menu Bar -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types -> .xls -> Advanced -> Uncheck the 'Browse in same window'.

Update: Here are some instructions from Microsoft on how to prevent the embedded MS Office features via the registry.
