Linux Mint v 20 GUI will mount USB Apple drives automaticly. HOWEVER: for non trivial stuff (i.e. more than a few known files you want) use the command line. Symlinks and hidden files are confusing / hidden in GUI bulk file and copy.
Ubuntu Live CD works too to read Apple formatted USB hard disk drives. Don't try and load it with 256MB of RAM though!

OLD: This post in usenet, here , details how one can use Knoppix to open an Apple CD. It should work similarly in most other Linux distributions. Knoppix 6 does it automagically.
NOTE: You can only READ an Apple HFP+ partition safely. To write, you must mangle the drive to disable journaling - i.e. don't do this on a borrowed disk.
