I need to burn subtitles into the movies so that my standalone player will work for me. It's old by today's standards and it doesn't handle many subtitles very well on its own.

The gist, is to install VirtualDub, and VobSub with VirtualDub plugin. Open file in VDub, add TextSub video filter (Video -> Filters). Turn on full video processing. And encode in codec of your choice.
The tutorial says to use the TextSub filter in vdub, sometimes subtitle files are in a format that requires the use of the "VobSub" filter in vdub.
