Random Linux time notes as I try to fix the time in my SME Server Virtual Machine (in VMWare Server 2)

• I think the syntax of the date command shifts based on your region or time settings.  Otherwise, I can't explain the messed up format.  This worked for me to set the time to 10:59 AM on Nov. 8, 2010 - "date 110810582010" - hmm... that matches my ancient note below.

Old:

First in Linux, there is a software clock, you can set it with date. Second there is the RTC in the CMOS of your PC. If you now set the new time with date MMDDHHMMYY you only set the software clock. this means in the time you reboot your PC these changes won't take effect. So afer you set the software clock, you have to set the RTC in your CMOs with clock -uw But look at man date and man clock for timezone data.
