Soundex to Work around Spelling Problems

A sidenote in a post in a slashdot article (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/16/2131241) mentioned that there was a way to attempt correcting for spelling differences using a publiced code called Soundex. 

I've looked for such a beast in the past, and now it looks like I might have one.  This might be good for fuzzy searching a customer databases or what not.  It seems like this is by no means a secret algo, but it's new to me.
