I had trouble running scheduled reports in CE9 to SMTP. The debugging document on the Business Objects site did not help. In the end, it turned out to be a permissions problem with the account used to run the Crystal Enterprise Job Server service.

Err Msg: “write error. CrystalEnterprise.SMTP: (0)”

Using LocalSystem or an Administrative account worked - although, I suspect that any account with "log on locally" permissions to the Crystal Enterprise server would work. Looking at a filemon.exe log, CE tries to open a shell process which can fail if the permissions are messed up.
