Electrical Wiring Notes

Wiring a light switch:

Always run the hot to the switch because... "If you stick your finger into a light socket on a circuit that is neutral switched, electricity is able to travel to the light socket, through you to ground and you would thus be shocked. By interrupting the hot wire at the switch instead of the neutral in a properly wired circuit, you have stopped the current before it passes through the load." - http://www.acmehowto.com/electrical/switch-works.php

Should apply to flourescents too. If a tube breaks, you don't want power running around there while you try to pry out the end stubs.

Wire Colours:

neutral is white
hot (live or active) are black, and red in the case of a second active

Twist on Connections:

Saw reference to extend stranded wire 1/8 beyond solid wire to avoid loose joins. Also, apparently pre-twisting in a twist on is optional (but recommended)
